About Wildflowers at Cape Cod Light (Highland Light)-
Perched on a bluff 120-feet above the Atlantic Ocean in Truro, Massachusetts, Cape Cod Light, known locally as Highland Light, was the first lighthouse built on Cape Cod. Erected in 1797 to warn ships away from the treacherous Peaked Hill Bars three miles northeast of the light in the Atlantic Ocean, the original 45-foot-tall wood structure shown 160 feet above sea level and was illuminated by 24 lamps burning sperm whale oil. During the 1990s, the encroaching Atlantic imperiled the “new” 1857 lighthouse, and in 1996, $1.5 million was raised to cover the cost of moving the 450-ton structure 570 feet inland where the beam now shines 183 feet above sea level.
