Staff Reviews

Rarely do I stick with a series for more than 5 or 6 books.  The Gaslight Mysteries by Victoria Thompson are an exception to that.  The series is set in turn of the century New York City.  The main character, Sarah Brandt, is a midwife which enables her to travel through various sections of Manhattan.  When the series begins, she is a widow and estranged from her wealthy parents.  There are currently 17 books in the series.  Start with #1, Murder on Astor Place.  This is by far, one of my favorite mystery series.  In many of the books, it is fairly easy to figure out the murderer, but I keep coming back to it because of the characters and setting.  Lovers of historical fiction and cozy mysteries should give this a try.

About the Mystery Maven-

"I work part-time in a new and used bookstore, Read It Again. The store is located in Johns Creek, GA, a suburb of Atlanta. I enjoy reading all kinds of books, but mysteries are my go-to genre. I particularly like historical mysteries and cozies with a sense of place and strong female characters." Click here to follow the Mystery Maven blog.
