Read It Again Bookstore is excited to welcome Maria James- Thiaw and Marilyn Kallet to our new weekly poetry series. Maria and Marilyn are old friends. This should be a fun and lively conversation about poetry, craft and common interests.
Maria James-Thiaw, M.S., MFA
is an award-winning poet, performer, playwright, and professor. Her publications include poetry and reviews in several literary journals such as New Letters, Cutthroat Journal of the Arts, One Trick Pony Review, and Black Magnolias as well as a spoken word CD entitled FREEverse, many anthologies, and the collections Windows to the Soul (Shippensburg UniversityPress, 1999), Rising Waters (Shippensburg University Press, 2003), Talking “White” (postDada Press, 2013), and her choreopoem Reclaiming My Time: An American Griot Project, which sold out 6 times in March 2018.
With Reclaiming My Time director, Janet Bixler, Maria James-Thiaw has begun a new venture: Reclaim Artist Collective, a soon-to-be nonprofit organization that will serve marginalized communities, emerging artists and schools with affordable theater and literary arts programming, wellness retreats, and creative workshops.
Marilyn Kallet is serving her second term as Knoxville Poet Laureate. She has published 8 books, including How Our Bodies Learned, The Love That Moves Me, and Packing light: New and Selected Poems, Black Widow Press. She has translated Paul Eluard’s Last Love Poems and Benjamin Péret’s The Big Game. Dr. Kallet is Professor Emerita at the University of Tennessee. She mentors poetry groups for the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, in Auvillar, France. Her poetry has appeared recently in New Letters, Plume, One and North American Review. Poetry is forthcoming in Cutthroat, 101 Jewish Poems for the New Millennium, and New Voices, an anthology of contemporary voices confronting antisemitism.
